In the months before his life came to an end, Don Ho shared a lifetime of memories with veteran music writer Jerry Hopkins. The result of this timely collaboration is Don Ho: My Music, My Life, a unique mix of his own recollections and the stories of friends and family — what Don called “a modern Hawaiian quilt” of memories.
Born in a poor Honolulu neighborhood in 1930, Donald Tai Loy Ho combined his musical gift, beachboy demeanor and love of the islands to become Hawaii’s most beloved entertainer — and one of the biggest draws in show business.
For nearly half a century, Don Ho was synonymous with the Hawaiian Islands — from his “wild, unpredictable” early shows at Duke Kahanamoku’s to a tour and television career that carried the spirit of aloha to audiences around the world. But it was his laid-back, hang-loose Island charm that endeared him to millions.
“A Don Ho fan is his friend,” as television and radio personality Jim Lange observed. “That’s the way Don works.” Sympathy wishes collected online overwhelmingly shared the same characteristic: his fans felt they had a personal relationship with Don, their own stories to tell about the legendary icon.
Finished only two days before Ho died of heart failure in April, this hardcover coffee-table book is full of anecdotes and hundreds of memorable photographs from Don Ho’s personal collection and many other sources — not just the behind-the-scenes showbiz stories, but tales of the youthful football star, the Air Force pilot, the community leader and the father of 10 children.
Here is the story of a barefoot island boy who grew up to work and play with the biggest names in show business and society, from Jackie Kennedy to Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope to Elvis Presley–yet an entertainment icon who summed it up with the title of one of his biggest hits: “Ain’t No Big Ting!”

This Biography is stunningly done and is a real tribute to a great Island performer. It is written in a down to earth fashion and is a true insight to a Hawaiian man and his family. The photographs that are in the book are a testament to Don and his artistic talents. The celebrities shown are a who’s who in the entertainment field as well as prominent persons and the people who came to see him perform in person at Dukes. This book is definitely a must have item.

My husband and I saw Don Ho for our 13th wedding anniversary, he was such a gracious man, he took pictures with us and signed autographs and gave us hand fulls of his recordings as gifts. He told my husband to always take care of me. I have always loved him and his music from when I watched him on tv when he would surprise the women and give them big kisses, I thought he was the coolest thing that ever lived. After reading his book, I learned he was more humble than I would have ever imagined and that touched me so, I’m a bigger fan today than I ever was. I’ll miss him dearly. Aloha Don and God Bless.

Don Ho is a very special person to me. I know a little bit more of the Don Ho than most as his Mama used to write to me. He was a very loving and caring person. He did so very much for the Hawaiian people, he loved so much.
The book brought me back to 1968 when I met him and his family. Each page is like being in his presence when he is talking about the “old times.” Those he was closest to remember times with him. This is great reading and I recommend to all who would like to know a little more of Don Ho the entertainer. I miss him and Mama.
