The hostel was pretty bad, dirty and had uncomfortable beds but I was exhausted and fell asleep pretty much instantly. Rach however, struggles more than I do to sleep in unclean surroundings and, to add insult to injury, had a broken bed which guaranteed her a sleepless night. When I woke up, Rachael had already been up for hours scoping out new hostels and had found a decent one down the road called Casa Viena, we packed our stuff and moved. The area we were in was called Getsemani and was pretty rough, the travel books advise you to be quite savvy round there and avoid walking round at night — this was reflected by the general feel of the area and the grotty streets. We didn’t encounter any problems but we weren’t overwhelmed by the area, probably because we had been spoiled by beautiful cities such as Granada and Panama City. We found a cool little German bar down the road, bought a 3 litre tube of beer (complete with tap) and prepared for the England/USA game. Initially we were the only ones in there, but just before kickoff, about 60 people barged in, as it turned out half were English and half were American. The Yanks were generally pretty quiet but got progressively louder after Rob Green’s howler
